The Gift of Sight | University of Miami Medicine Magazine

As a photographer it goes without saying that I depend on my vision for my livelihood. For that reason, the story of nineteen-year-old Naomi Lopez hit particularly close to home.

As a young, gifted photographer and artist, she had been suffering for months with a chronic and painful eye infection that was eroding her cornea. Eventually, light was the only thing she was able to see out of that eye.

Thankfully, Naomi was able to undergo a treatment and therapy at Bascom-Palmer Eye Institute that was able to save her vision.

“Today her vision is clear , and she is very grateful to the donors who made it all possible.” - Cathy Alton

I particularly enjoyed making these portraits of Naomi, who was home from college, in her family’s backyard chicken coop.

Naomi was able to wrangle this chicken for a quick portrait.
