Portraits of My Sister | Miami Design District
Two days before I graduated from high school, my parents had a second child. They named her Eden and at the time, I was technically old enough to be her mother.
Eden and I never really lived in the same house. Three months after she was born, I moved off to college and only came back for summers. In my mind, she hasn’t aged- she is still the cute, tiny little girl with big brown eyes and a mischievous smile, who called me Sissy. But in reality, she’s now all grown up.
This time last year, Eden came to visit me in Miami, from Louisville, our hometown. She brought along her friend, Emma and just as we had done when they were two little girls in Catholic school uniforms, we held an impromptu photo session. But this time, rather than in our parent’s driveway in Louisville, KY, it was in the Miami Design District, on the rooftop of the Museum garage.
I was hoping Eden would make it down to Miami again this year, but alas we’re in the middle of a pandemic, so any travel will have to wait.
I miss her and although it seemed strange at the time- to have a sibling young enough to be my child, I’m so glad I do and she will always be my muse.
